Development agents are subagents that write and modify code: language and framework specialists, coding agents you can delegate a whole change to, and definitions extracted from larger harnesses that ship a dozen role-specific agents at once. Because this is the biggest agent category, it also collects contributor guides and project documents the pipeline classified as agents; the quality score and description tell them apart.
You delegate to one when a task is well-bounded and you want it done in its own context window: implement this endpoint, port this module, add this migration. A subagent starts from your CLAUDE.md and its own system prompt but not from your conversation, so it is a clean room for work that would otherwise drag the main session's context along. Specialists with a narrow tool list are the ones to trust with autonomy.
An agent is a single markdown file: put it at ~/.claude/agents/<name>.md, or in .claude/agents/ inside a project to share it with the team. The frontmatter carries the name, a description Claude uses to decide when to delegate, and an optional tools list; the entry page shows the curl command that fetches it. Type /agents in Claude Code to see it listed, then ask for it by name or let Claude pick it.
