Data skills give Claude Code a way to reach and reason about data rather than just code: private RAG and text-to-SQL layers that run on local models, context databases that unify agent memory and knowledge, domain toolkits for financial services and market data, and skills that turn a description of a system into a verifiable architecture or data-flow diagram. A few are operational, such as shippers for Elasticsearch and Logstash.
You want one when the job is about the data behind the application: querying a warehouse without hand-writing every SQL statement, standing up retrieval over internal documents, pulling market series for analysis, or producing diagrams that stay consistent with the schema. They are also the right pick when Claude needs a persistent memory across sessions and you would rather run that locally than through a hosted service.
A data skill is installed like any other, as a folder under ~/.claude/skills/ with a SKILL.md and the scripts it ships; copy the command from the entry page. Many of these connect to something (a database, an API, a broker), so check what credentials the skill expects and where it stores them before it runs. A new session picks it up.
