University Research Agent — AI skill for Claude Code

A small AI agent with a web chat page. You ask a question, and the agent decides by itself which tools to use to answer it.

Built with Python and the Claude API (Anthropic SDK).


What it can do

Tool	What it does
get_current_time	Tells the current date and time
calculate	Does exact arithmetic
list_files	Lists the files in the workspace folder
read_file	Reads a text file
write_file	Creates or overwrites a text file
search_files	Searches all files for a word or phrase

The file tools only work inside the `workspace/` folder, so the agent cannot touch anything else on the computer.

How it works

Browser (index.html)  --->  web.py (Python server)  --->  agent.py  --->  Claude API
   HTML + CSS + JS            passes messages               tools + loop

• index.html - the chat page: HTML for structure, CSS for the look, JavaScript for sending messages and showing live steps.
• web.py - a small server that receives a message from the page, runs the agent, and sends back each step as it happens.
• agent.py - the agent: the tools, and the loop in which Claude asks for a tool, the tool runs, and the result goes back to Claude.

Run it

1. Install Python 3.10 or newer.

2. Install the dependency:

   pip install -r requirements.txt

3. Create a file named `key.txt` in this folder containing your Anthropic API key (from https://platform.claude.com). This file is listed in `.gitignore` and is never uploaded.

4. Start the web page:

   python web.py

   and open http://localhost:8000

   Or chat in the terminal instead:

   python agent.py

• Each question uses a small amount of API credit.
• The page runs only on your own computer (localhost).
