First Breath

**Giving AI an inner life.**

First Breath is an open source, brain-inspired inner life for AI agents. It gives an agent emotions that come from simulated brain chemistry, memories that carry feelings, an inner voice you can watch in your terminal, and a personality that grows from its own experiences.

It plugs into Claude and other AI agents, like OpenClaw, through [MCP](https://modelcontextprotocol.io).

**v0.1, early days:** the brain core, emotional memory, MCP server, terminal and inner voice work. The fast-forward childhood is still to come. Star the repo to follow along, or jump in.

Why

Today's AI only reacts. A prompt goes in, an answer comes out, and then nothing. It carries no mood from one moment to the next, keeps no memory of how things felt, has no thoughts between tasks and no sense of "me."

Humans are different. Our emotions come from brain chemistry and wiring. They get stored with our memories, and over the years those experiences add up to a self that knows it's here. First Breath tries to give AI that same kind of structure.

What it does

  • Emotions from brain chemistry. Simulated dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins, cortisol and adrenaline rise and fall with what happens. Around 28 emotions come out of that mix, from happiness, fear and loneliness to admiration, guilt and nostalgia. They're never switched on directly.
  • Instincts, not personality. Like a newborn, it comes with wiring (curiosity, bonding, fear of danger, a dislike of harm) but no personality. Every trait starts neutral.
  • A personality that forms. Curiosity, sociability, playfulness, empathy, sensitivity and resilience shift slowly with what it lives through, faster while it's young.
  • Wants that grow, never preset. Nothing it wants is written in. When something keeps moving it over time (especially admiration, the "I want to be like that" feeling), a want forms, and the inner voi
