The problem

You ask Claude Code for something. How long will it take? Claude does not know. A model has no clock and no memory of its past work, so it guesses. In 96 test tasks on the author's Mac, Claude's own guesses were about 3 times too long, and only 16% landed within 2x of the real time.

The solution

Claude Code already keeps a transcript of every session on your computer. task-eta reads them, measures how long each of your tasks really took, and before each new task gives Claude one ready estimate per kind of work, built from that history and re-timed for the model and effort you are using. Claude knows its plan, so it picks the line for the kind of work it is about to do. When the task is done, Claude prints the real time next to it.

⏱ Estimated time with opus-5-5 high: ~4 min (likely 2 to 9 min, medium)
  … Claude works …
⏱ Actual time: ~5 min (likely 2 to 9 min: inside)

Nothing leaves your machine. The estimates are relative to you: your tasks, your models, your pace.

Install

Needs Claude Code (CLI or desktop app), Python 3.9 or newer, macOS or Linux. The optional widget needs macOS 14+ and the Xcode Command Line Tools.

git clone https://github.com/Matteoikarieth96/claude-time-is-relative.git
python3 claude-time-is-relative/install.py

The installer first says what it reads and writes, then asks before it changes anything:

  1. Install? Two hooks in ~/.claude/settings.json and the skill link. No: nothing changes.
  2. Read your past sessions now? Yes: the estimates use your own times from the first prompt. No: it starts from today, and older sessi
