The problem

It's the night before the demo. You ask your agent for a plan, and this comes back:

**Phase 1: Foundations** (Weeks 1-2) **Phase 2: Core features** (Week 3) **Phase 3: Hardening and polish** (Week 4)

You have ten hours. The agent could write most of this before your coffee goes cold.

It does this because agents learned how long software takes from text people wrote: sprint plans, blog posts, tickets. Ask one for an estimate and you get human weeks, even though it finishes the work in minutes. In the [AgentTime benchmark](https://arxiv.org/html/2610.09944), agents overestimated their own runtime by roughly 2.6-3.8x.

So you tell it "I only have 10 hours", and it quietly drops half the project. Ten hours was plenty.

Some agents go the other way. They build for forty minutes, announce "done", and the app crashes on the first click, because nobody ran it.
