README

The Catacomb Abyss for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive

A port of Softdisk's *The Catacomb Abyss* (Gamer's Edge shareware v1.13, 1992) to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, built with SGDK 2.11 from the GPL source release (CatacombGames/CatacombAbyss) and the original shareware data files.

Everything in the shareware package is converted from the original files:

  • The game (CATABYSS.EXE): all 19 levels, every monster, item, scroll, level description text, the in-game help (HELP.TXT), the F10 debug keys, and all sound effects in both their AdLib and PC speaker versions.
  • The title sequence (INTRO.EXE): all twelve SHPxx.ABS screens with the original order, timings and beeps, the "Novice or Warrior?" challenge and the story screen.
  • The electronic catalog (DEMOCAT.EXE): the 23 pages of SCRIPT.CAT and the LAST.CAT closing screen.
  • The user's guide shell (START.EXE): MENU, QUICK, INSTRUCT and PRODUCTS .SHL documents in the original 80x25 text layout inside BKGND.SHL's frame, plus PRINTFIL.TXT (the catalog's written information and order form).
  • The closing screens (LOADSCN.EXE): ARMAPC.ABS and LAST.ABS.

Text that describes PC keys, DOS, disks, memory or printers was rewritten for the joypad and the cartridge (including the key hints drawn into the status bar and title screen pictures); everything else is kept as written.
