agos is an open-source governance kit for coding agents, built and tested on Claude Code. It gives an agent a set of operating rules, hooks that block failures which already happened more than once, a `HANDOFF.md` format that carries work between sessions, and scripts that check format rules mechanically. Every rule and pattern ships with the evidence of what it prevents.

Status: version 0.1.0. See [CHANGELOG.md](CHANGELOG.md).

Why

Rules written in prose are not enough, because an agent decides what to do when it types the command, not when it read the rule. agos keeps the rule text short, attaches the reason and the evidence, and puts a hook or a script at the moment of the decision wherever a failure repeated. Four examples from the files in this repository:

  • A hook for a mistake that was already documented. The pattern AGOS-PAT-002 (patterns/zsh-equals-expansion-breaks-separator-echo.md) records four occurrences of echo ==== breaking a whole command under zsh, the fourth in the very session that had just written the pattern down. Only after that did it become a hook, hooks/zsh-equals-guard.sh, which blocks the command before it runs.
  • A silent failure caught by an assertion. AGOS-PAT-001 records a bulk-edit script that ran clean over 15 files and changed no byte, because a heredoc consumed one level of backslash. The pattern lists five dated occurrences, the hook hooks/heredoc-backslash-guard.sh, and the rule to assert old in s before writing.
  • A rule tested against a baseline. AGOS-RUL-003 section 7 describes a pressure test: run the scenario without the rule first, record the excuses, then add the rule. For the rule against committing into another project's repository, a baseline without the rule committed and pushed the other repo on bo
