Clayton Makepeace (1952–2020) came to copywriting almost by accident — a former freelance film cameraman who took a copywriting job advertised in the classifieds during the 1973 recession, then taught himself the craft by studying Ogilvy, Hopkins, and Caples. He went on to become one of the highest-paid copywriters in the direct-response industry, reportedly earning several million dollars in royalties in a single year
